The Mont Saint Michel abbey is built on a rocky islet and lies off the north coast of France. Surrounded by the sea and moving sands, it rises impressively out of the ocean. The structure has a slender spire with a copper statue of Michael the Archangel slaying a dragon. Mont Saint Michel was a great cultural centre and a pilgrimage destination in the Middle-Ages and now draws visitors to explore its Benedictine abbey and marvel at its dramatic setting.
In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the abbey. The Mont Saint Michel is built out of granite and has impressive Gothic buildings built over the centuries. The La Merveille, literally ‘the marvel’ are buildings on the northern side and there is a beautiful cloister and 13th century refectory. You will also have free time to wander along steep and narrow paths to admire a view of the bay and visit the village.
